Smoobu Alternatives for Small Vacation Rental Hosts
Updated October 30th, 20266 min read

Smoobu is a popular choice with European hosts. It combines a channel manager, a booking website and a unified calendar and inbox in one tool. For many hosts that's exactly right. But if you have one to five properties and mainly want a page where past guests can book you directly, you may be paying for a system bigger than your needs.
This guide covers what Smoobu does well, why some small hosts look at Smoobu alternatives, which options fit which needs, and how to switch without losing a booking.
Prices and features change often. This guide reflects what we know as of October 2026. Check each vendor's current pricing page before deciding.
What Smoobu does well, and who should stay
To be fair, Smoobu is strong where it matters for many hosts:
- Channel manager. Availability, and on supported connections rates, are managed from one place and sent to platforms like Airbnb and Booking.com.
- Unified calendar. All bookings from all channels in one view.
- Unified inbox. Guest messages from different platforms in one place, with templates for common replies.
- Booking website and engine. A direct booking site with online payments, so guests can pay when they book.
Stay with Smoobu if you list on several platforms and actively manage rates through the channel manager, rely on guests paying online at booking, or use the shared inbox every day. Those are real time savers, and switching would cost you more than it saves.
Why some small hosts look elsewhere
These are the reasons small hosts give most often. Not all of them will apply to you.
Paying for a channel manager you don't use
A channel manager is valuable when you juggle rates across many listings and platforms. With one or two apartments and prices you change a few times a season, calendar sync alone may be enough. If that's you, much of what you pay for sits unused.
How the cost grows per unit
Like most tools in this space, Smoobu's price is tied to the number of units you manage. Adding a second or third apartment can change your yearly bill more than you expect. Work out the total for the size you plan to be next year, not just today.
Fees on bookings
Reviews describe different plan types, and some reportedly add a fee on bookings while others don't. Plans change, so check Smoobu's current pricing page. If a fee applies, add it to your yearly cost, because it grows with your revenue.
Setup effort
Connecting channels, mapping rates and configuring the booking engine takes time. Some hosts would rather have a page they can set up in an afternoon and leave alone.
The main Smoobu alternatives, by need
Simplest booking page: OpenSty
OpenSty gives each property its own booking page at yourname.opensty.com with a live calendar, iCal sync with Airbnb, Booking.com and VRBO, seasonal and per-day pricing, fees, a damage deposit, discounts and minimum nights, in seven languages. Guests send a request and you confirm or decline each one. Card payments are optional, through your own Stripe account, with no OpenSty fee.
- Pricing: flat plans with no commission. €14/month for one property, €29/month for up to five, €99/month for up to 50 with team members. Setup is free; you need a plan to publish.
- Good for: small hosts who want direct bookings from past guests and referrals without running a full system.
- Not for you if: you need a channel manager or instant booking.
All-in-one website with payments: Lodgify
Lodgify combines a website builder, a booking engine with online payments and a channel manager. It suits hosts who want a full multi-page website rather than a single booking page. See our Lodgify alternatives guide for its trade-offs.
Messaging automation: Hospitable
Hospitable is best known for automating guest messages, and it also offers direct booking sites. It fits hosts on Airbnb who spend too much time answering the same questions.
Deep features: OwnerRez
OwnerRez is a very feature-rich property management system with detailed pricing rules, quotes, payments, agreements and integrations. It suits owner-operators who want full control and don't mind a learning curve. Read OwnerRez vs a simple booking page to see whether you need that much.
Do it yourself: WordPress plus a booking plugin
You can build your own site with WordPress and a booking or calendar plugin. You get full design freedom and your own domain, but you're responsible for updates, security and making calendar sync reliable.

How to decide
- List what you actually use in Smoobu today. If the channel manager and online payments are on that list, stay or pick an alternative that has both.
- Count your platforms. One or two platforms with occasional price changes usually works fine with iCal sync.
- Decide how guests will pay. By card through the tool, or by a deposit you handle yourself? Our guide to taking payments for direct bookings explains the options.
- Compare the yearly total. Subscription, any booking fees and payment processing, at the size you plan to be.

How to switch without losing a booking
- Export your calendars. Copy the iCal export link for each property and platform, so the new tool knows every booked date.
- Copy your content. Save your photos, descriptions, house rules and price settings before you change anything.
- Set up the new tool and import calendars. Connect Airbnb, Booking.com and any other platforms by iCal, and check that every existing booking appears.
- Run both in parallel for a few weeks. Keep Smoobu running while you test the new setup on your phone and with a friend's test request.
- Update your links. Change the booking link in your social profiles, local listings, email signature and printed cards.
- Move future bookings carefully. Honour existing direct bookings where they were made. Only cancel your Smoobu plan once all future stays are recorded in the new system.
Common questions
Is there a free Smoobu alternative?
Free tools exist, but most limit features or add fees per booking. A flat, low monthly price with no commission is often cheaper over a year than a "free" tool that takes a percentage.
Do I need a channel manager with one apartment?
Usually not. iCal calendar sync blocks dates booked on other platforms. A channel manager becomes worth it when you manage rates across many listings and platforms.
Will I lose my reviews if I switch?
Reviews on Airbnb and Booking.com stay on those platforms. Reviews you collected on your own site may not transfer, so save copies and add your best ones to your new page.
Can I switch back later?
Yes, as long as you keep your photos and texts and can export calendars by iCal. Running both tools side by side for a while makes any switch low-risk.
